Here’s a confession:

for the past 7 years, it was quite hard for me to write. it was hard to sit in front of a blank white screen because i couldn’t get myself to feel anything. and to me, the prerequisite of writing is feeling.

maybe because a lot of things have changed. i don’t think i’m still that 17-year-old who writes love poems when she’s in love. no longer that sad girl who writes about how excruciating life was. things have been better, and so i didn’t have any material to write about.

but you know, even though life has gotten so much better, there are still some things you feel strongly about. moments you feel nostalgic about. things that make you think, “oh… that one.” they make you feel something.

a year ago, i said: if i’m gonna write a book, i want it to stand the test of time. i want it not to be just a phase. not just something that’s suitable for a certain season of my life. i want it to be timeless.

and so, at the same desk where i used to stare at a blank white space, i started thinking about my childhood and how much it molded me. i think about the people i grew up with and feel gratitude. i think about those people who… just helped us become us.

… and i write about those things.

hence, the birth of this book.
